Recapping the 2013 Archives Crawl

Thank you once again to everyone who took part in the 2013 Sacramento Archives Crawl!  With the theme of A Passion to Preserve, this year's event offered practical advice and examples of well-preserved collections.  Many hundreds toured among the four host locations (California State Archives, California State Library, Center for Sacramento History and Sacramento Public Library), with a record number taking advantage of shuttle service aboard a 1958 vintage bus.  We also gave out a record number of commemorative coasters to those who gathered stamps in the their passports from at least three of the host sites.  Well done, everyone!

Where To Begin

To get started on this year's Archives Crawl, begin at ANY of the four host locations: the California State Archives (1020 'O' Street), California State Library (900 'N' Street), Center for Sacramento History (551 Sequoia Pacific Blvd.), or Central Library* (828 'I' Street).  You will be given a passport at the first location you visit, which will provide a map to the others.  Each host location will stamp your passport when you arrive.  Read the posts below for details on transportation and parking, participating archives, and prize giveaways and drawings.

*Be one of the first twenty visitors to mention the code word "acid-free" at Central Library and take home a giveaway bag stuffed with goodies!

Your passport to preservation

The 2013 Archives Crawl passport is packed with all the info you'll need to make your crawl a success, including a map, bus schedule, directory of participating archives, information about the preservation fair at Central Library, images of a few treasures you will see on the tour and more. Participants will be issued a passport when they begin the crawl at any host location.

Transportation and Parking

Transportation

Locations:
California State Archives (1020 O Street)
California State Library (900 N Street)
Center for Sacramento History (551 Sequoia Pacific Blvd.)
Central Library (828 I Street)

Driving: Free parking is available at the California State Archives (1020 O Street) and the Center for Sacramento History (551 Sequoia Pacific Blvd.).   The California State Library (900 N Street) is within easy walking distance of the California State Archives. Convenient street and garage parking is available at many locations downtown for a fee.

Walking: The California State Archives (1020 O Street) and California State Library (900 N Street) are within easy walking distance of one another.  The Central Library (828 I Street) is 1/2 mile from the State Archives and State Library.   

Bus: Crawlers can also choose to travel aboard a vintage 1958 Sacramento Transit Authority bus provided by Pacific Bus Museum and Stage Tours. See the bus and schedule below.

**This route repeats on the half-hour through the 3 o’clock hour.**

Sacramento Archives Crawl participants who visit at least three of the four host locations (California State Archives, California State Library, Center for Sacramento History and Central Library) will take home a set of limited-edition 2013 coasters featuring images of well-preserved treasures from participating archives (while supplies last):


In addition, this year we’ll be giving away bonus prizes at the Central Library host location.  The first twenty visitors to mention the code word Acid-Free will receive a giveaway bag full of local history and preservation goodies. And all who visit the library can enter a free drawing for a preservation kit, history books and more!

New Archives Crawl bookmarks have arrived

Visit your local Sacramento archives soon to pick up our new Sacramento Archives Crawl bookmark! The bookmarks feature a historical panoramic photograph of the old California State Fairgrounds on Stockton Blvd., ca. 1910, from the collections of the California State Archives.  Bookmarks will be available at participating repositories leading up to the big day and will be included in crawlers' bags on October 5.
